What the Fellowship Actually Pays

The financial package is straightforward and, unusually, fully protected. The stipend escalates across the three years: $74,000, then $76,000, then $78,000. On top of that, the host institution receives $5,000 annually, which the sponsor may spend on research supplies, conference travel, health insurance, or childcare. CRI names childcare explicitly, which matters for postdocs who are often at exactly the career stage where that cost lands.

The clause worth reading twice is this one: deductions for administrative overhead are not allowed from either the stipend or the institutional allowance. Some institutions habitually skim indirect costs off fellowship allowances; CRI forbids it. If your grants office pushes back, that sentence on the official page is your reference point, and it is worth resolving before you submit rather than after you win.

CRI also funds fellows to attend its Bioinformatics Bootcamp. Experience ceiling. Applicants who will have five or more years of mentored research experience at the time of award activation are not eligible. Use your doctoral degree conferral date to calculate this. M.D. applicants do not count residency years toward the total. Field. The work must be directly related to immunology or cancer immunology. CRI phrases the test as: the project “must fall into the broad field of immunology with relevance to solving the cancer problem.” Pure tumor biology with no immune axis does not qualify. Host institution. Any non-profit institution, in the United States or abroad. Industry labs are out.

Sponsor. Your sponsor must hold a formal appointment at assistant professor rank or above. Only one fellow per sponsor may apply in a given round — so if a labmate is also applying on September 1, one of you needs to wait for March. A faculty sponsor may not hold more than three CRI-supported fellows at any one time. Two of the three are about people and setting rather than the experiments. That is a meaningful signal for a four-page proposal: a technically flawless aims page will not rescue a thin sponsor letter or an unclear account of why this lab, specifically.

CRI adds that the applicant and sponsor are together expected to show how the research advances understanding of the immune system’s role in cancer, how the fellowship supplies new skills and approaches, and — the one applicants most often neglect — “a clear trajectory toward independence.” That third point asks you to write about a career, not just a project. What will you know how to do in three years that you cannot do now, and what kind of independent program does that set up?

Formatting rules are enforced: single-spaced, 12-point font or larger, PDF only, each file uploaded individually on the attachments page. Applications exceeding the stated page limits are disqualified. Incomplete applications are not considered.

The Timeline

Applications close at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the deadline date. If a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, submissions are accepted until 11:59 p.m. the following workday. September 1, 2026 falls on a Tuesday, so the deadline holds as stated.

Decisions arrive roughly 10 to 12 weeks after the deadline — for the September 2026 cycle, that points to mid-November through early December 2026. Fellowships may activate from four months after the deadline and no later than one year following it, always on the first of a month. A September 2026 applicant is therefore looking at a start date somewhere between January 2027 and September 2027, which gives real flexibility if you are still finishing a thesis or winding down a previous position.

Build backwards from that. Sponsor letters and recommendation letters are the items outside your control; ask for them in July, not the last week of August. The DocuSign signature chain is the other classic failure point — your application is not considered submitted until every signatory has signed. CRI’s own advice is to submit early precisely so there is time to fix an incomplete file.

Preparing a Competitive Application

Choose the sponsor deliberately, and write about the choice. Because the training environment is an explicit review criterion, the proposal should make clear what this lab offers that your PhD lab did not — a technique, a model system, a patient sample pipeline, a co-mentor with complementary expertise. Vague admiration for a famous PI is not an argument.

Use the 250-word training-gaps statement seriously. It is the shortest section and the one most likely to be written in a hurry. It is also the section that most directly answers the question CRI is asking. Name concrete gaps — computational analysis of single-cell data, in vivo modeling, human sample work, clinical correlate access — and name the concrete resources that close them.

Write the lay abstract for an actual lay reader. CRI says outright that this abstract goes to its Board of Trustees and is used for fundraising. Reviewers notice when a scientist can explain their work without jargon; trustees notice more. Read it aloud to someone outside your field before you submit.

Respect the four-page limit absolutely. Over-length proposals are disqualified — not marked down, disqualified. That includes tables and figures. Cut before the deadline, not at midnight.

Be honest about preliminary data provenance. The sponsor is asked to state whether the preliminary data was generated by you or existed in the lab before you arrived. An answer that contradicts the impression your proposal creates is worse than modest preliminary data honestly labeled.

Disclose other applications. The list of other funding sources is required. Applying to multiple fellowships is normal and expected; concealing it is the problem.

Common Mistakes

  • Miscalculating the experience ceiling. The five-year limit is measured at award activation, which can be up to a year after the deadline. Applicants who calculate from the deadline sometimes discover too late that they age out.
  • Two applicants from one lab in the same round. Only one fellow per sponsor may apply per round. Coordinate.
