Most research funding asks you to arrive with data. This one exists to help you get it. The Medical Research Council, working with the UK Human Functional Genomics Initiative (FGx), is running a round of Academic and Industry Partnership awards worth £15,000 to £100,000 for exactly the kind of small, exploratory work that larger grant panels expect to see already completed: the feasibility test, the pilot experiment, the first pass at a method that either works or does not.
The awards sit inside FGx’s Innovation and Collaboration Fund. Their stated purpose is to build links between industrial partners and the Initiative — so this is not simply a small-grants pot for UK genomics. It is a matchmaking instrument. What the Award Actually Buys
The grant covers direct project costs at 100 percent — directly incurred and directly allocated costs on the individual feasibility or pilot project. In practice that means staff time, travel, and subsistence attached to the work itself. It also covers the costs of networking activities, again including travel and subsistence, which is a small but meaningful detail: part of what FGx is buying is people from different institutions and different sectors actually meeting.
The exclusions are just as informative as the inclusions, and they define the shape of a fundable project more sharply than the scope text does:
- No indirect or estates costs at the research organisation. This is not a full economic cost award, so the headline figure is closer to the money you will actually spend on the science than a comparable fEC grant would be.
- No equipment valued at £10,000 or more. Anything that looks like a capital purchase belongs in a different application.
- No intellectual property costs of any kind — registering, maintaining, or supporting patents or property rights are all out. If your industrial partner’s main interest is a filing, that expectation needs managing early.
- No undergraduate or postgraduate activities or training, and no core PhD training including tuition or bench fees. You cannot use this to fund a studentship.
- No contributions to existing knowledge transfer partnerships. A KTP already running is not a vehicle for this money.
- No duplication of other funding that would be more appropriate for the activity.
Read together, these rules describe a lean, self-contained piece of work: a researcher’s or postdoc’s time, some consumables and travel, and a defined question answered within a short window.
What FGx Is, and Why That Matters to Your Application
The UK Human Functional Genomics Initiative was established with £28.5 million from the MRC in collaboration with the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. Its purpose is to advance understanding of how genomic variation influences human physiology, and how that influence changes over time and in disease. Professor Jonathan Mill of the University of Exeter Medical School directs it — which is why the funding contact address sits at Exeter.
The Initiative has three moving parts you should know about before you write a word:
The research clusters. Roughly £16.9 million from MRC and BBSRC supports clusters in functional genomics. These include a molecular mechanisms cluster at the University of Edinburgh led by Professor Kenneth Baillie, using discarded surgical tissue donated by NHS patients for deep genetic and AI-driven characterisation; FGx-PTMv at Imperial College under Dr Matthew Child, working on clinical coding variants that alter amino acids and protein function, drawing on rare disease variants from the Genomics England 100,000 Genomes Project; a musculoskeletal cluster at the University of Oxford led by Professor Dominic Furniss; and a human brain development cluster at King’s College London under Professor Oscar Marín, using brain organoid models to study variation linked to epilepsy, autism, and intellectual disability. FGx materials also reference a data coordination centre alongside the clusters.
The functional genomics screening laboratory. £7 million from the MRC established this at the Milner Therapeutics Institute, in collaboration with AstraZeneca and the University of Cambridge. It enables arrayed CRISPR genetic screening for researchers across the UK, focusing initially on non-cancerous disease — immune, cardiovascular, neuronal, and respiratory systems — with screening campaigns run as collaborations, MTI scientists providing expertise, technical support, and the screens themselves.
The Director’s award, £4.6 million, which includes a fund for data coordination, networking, and collaboration across the clusters and with external partners.
This structure matters because the call explicitly welcomes “technology priming projects that support the initiative, functional genomics screening lab or a specific research cluster,” and encourages projects that “bring in specific knowledge or contributions to the initiative.” A proposal that names the cluster or facility it connects to, and explains what that connection adds in both directions, is answering the question the panel is actually asking.
Scope: What They Want to Fund
The formal scope asks for projects that build and strengthen collaborations across the Initiative and the UK, through feasibility, pilot, or initial studies producing preliminary experiments and initial data that could support competitive collaborative grant proposals for longer-term projects.
Areas of potential interest listed in the call — explicitly not an exhaustive list — are:
- generation of novel functional genomic annotations in disease-relevant cell types
- development of novel methods, and functional perturbation of disease systems
- development of models for functional genomics, and data science and computational approaches for functional genomics
Note the deliberate breadth of the third item. Computational and data science proposals are named alongside wet-lab work, which opens the call to bioinformatics groups and to companies whose contribution is tooling, data, or analytical capacity rather than reagents and instruments.
Who Can Apply
To lead a project you must be based at an eligible organisation and be a researcher eligible for MRC funding. UKRI maintains the eligible organisation list; if you are unsure whether yours qualifies, check it before investing effort. Two points are worth emphasising because they widen the field more than people assume. First, you do not need to be MRC funded already. Prior MRC grant history is not a gate. Second, you can apply as an independent researcher with collaboration from an industrial partner — you do not need to be embedded in one of the clusters.
The non-negotiable condition is on the other side of the partnership. Industrial partners are expected to provide matched funding, and that can be cash, in kind, or a combination. In-kind matching is a genuine option, not a technicality: partner staff time, access to compound libraries or cell lines, sequencing capacity, proprietary datasets, or instrument access can all be quantified. But it must be real, specified, and agreed — an assumed contribution that has not been discussed with the partner’s finance or legal function is the most common way a promising application collapses at the last minute.

Read the guidance document before you draft. Word-count limits, cost-table formats, and the level of detail expected on the partner’s contribution are set there rather than on the UKRI summary page, and a form that ignores them creates avoidable friction at eligibility checking.

Assessment
UKRI applies its published principles of assessment and decision making: expert assessment, transparency, impartiality, appropriateness, confidentiality, integrity and ethics, equality, diversity and inclusion, and separation of duties. The review panel meets in mid-December 2026, with decisions announced in January 2027.
Detailed scoring criteria are not published on the UKRI opportunity page, so treat the scope statement as the criteria until the guidance document tells you otherwise. Three things are visibly load-bearing in how the call is written: whether the work genuinely strengthens collaboration across the Initiative and the UK; whether it plausibly leads somewhere — that is, whether the preliminary data would actually support a competitive larger proposal; and whether the industrial partnership is substantive rather than decorative.
Preparing a Competitive Application
Start from the follow-on grant, then work backwards. The award’s stated purpose is to generate data supporting future competitive proposals. Name the target: which scheme, roughly what scale, roughly when. A reviewer who can see the destination can judge whether this pilot is the right vehicle for getting there.
Make the partner’s stake legible. Say what the company gains, in its own terms, not only what it gives. Panels can tell the difference between a partner who has committed staff time to a shared question and one who has written a letter. Quantify in-kind contributions with the same care you would apply to cash.
Design something that can finish. Projects should start within three months of award, and the earliest start date is 1 March 2027. A pilot with a hard dependency on ethics approvals, tissue access, or a long procurement chain may not survive contact with that timetable. Where such dependencies exist, show that they are already resolved or in train.
Respect the cost rules in the budget itself, not just the narrative. No indirect or estates costs, no equipment at £10,000 or above, no IP costs, no student training. A budget that quietly includes any of these signals that the guidance was skimmed.
Connect to a named part of FGx. A cluster, the screening laboratory at the Milner Therapeutics Institute, or the data coordination function. Generic relevance to functional genomics is weaker than a specific, reciprocal link.
Common Mistakes
- Treating matched funding as a formality and discovering in late October that the partner cannot commit before their next budget cycle.
- Writing a scaled-down version of a full programme grant instead of a genuine feasibility study with a clear yes-or-no question.
- Budgeting a piece of equipment at £10,000 or more, or building the project around a purchase that the award cannot cover.
- Attempting to fund PhD student time or training costs, which is explicitly excluded.
- Overlapping with funding you already hold, or with an existing knowledge transfer partnership.
- Leaving the FGx connection implicit. The award exists to build links; a proposal that does not describe the link is answering a different question.
