The two-stage application route

If NERC approves the outline, it will invite the team by email to submit a full application through the UKRI Funding Service. The full application must be submitted within 10 working days of the official invitation. What the full application asks for
The application has a 550-word plain-English summary, a core-team section, and several scored or assessed questions. The summary should explain the context, the challenge, aims and objectives, and potential applications and benefits. Because UKRI may publish the summary, it should not include confidential or sensitive material.
The Vision response has a 330-word limit. It must explain what the work will achieve, why it is important and timely, who may benefit, and why the urgent route is necessary. NERC specifically expects applicants to explain why using another available funding opportunity would cause the research opportunity to be missed.
The Approach response has a 770-word limit. It should show an effective and feasible method, transparent methodology, delivery risks and mitigations, access to the needed research environment, and a clear plan for work after the urgent phase. The Applicant and team capability section has a 1,650-word limit and uses the Résumé for Research and Innovation (R4RI) format. It asks for evidence of relevant experience, a balanced team, leadership, development of others, contribution to the research community, and wider societal benefit.
