Most large Danish research funding is tied to a mission. This one is not. The Novo Nordisk Foundation’s Project Grants in the Natural and Technical Sciences exist to fund fundamental research — physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science and the technical sciences — on the basis that understanding something deeply tends to pay off later in life science, health science or sustainability. You are not asked to promise a therapeutic, a device or a commercial partner. You are asked to define a research question well and show you can answer it.

The 2026 call opened on 19 June and closes on 3 September 2026 at 2:00 PM Copenhagen time. The Foundation has set aside DKK 77 million for this round, with individual awards of up to DKK 4 million for projects running one to three years. Decisions land in December 2026.

That combination — a hard cap of DKK 4 million against a DKK 77 million pool — tells you something useful about the shape of the competition. If every award went out at the maximum, roughly nineteen projects would be funded. In practice budgets vary, so the number of grants will be somewhat higher. Either way, this is a call where a well-scoped DKK 2.5 million project with a credible plan competes perfectly well against a maximum-budget request that has been padded to reach the ceiling.

What the grant actually funds

The call supports fundamental research within the natural and technical sciences. The Foundation names physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science and the technical sciences as examples, and the list reads as illustrative rather than exhaustive — the boundary being drawn is between fundamental inquiry and applied development, not between named departments.

The qualifier that matters is the phrase about potential applications within life science, health science or sustainability. Read it carefully, because it is easy to over-read in both directions. It does not require your project to be a life-science project in disguise; the Foundation is funding this through its natural and technical sciences committee precisely because it wants basic work. Nor is it decorative. A project that has no conceivable line of sight to any of those three domains is arguing against the stated objective of the call.

The practical reading: your science should be genuinely fundamental, and you should be able to say — honestly, in a sentence or two, without contortion — where the eventual relevance lies. A new class of catalysts, a better numerical method for a class of PDEs, a measurement technique that resolves something previously inaccessible, a result in learning theory that changes what is computable at scale. Each of these can be described as basic work with a plausible downstream horizon. What does not work is retrofitting a health application onto a project that plainly has nothing to do with health.

Who can apply, and who cannot

Three eligibility conditions do most of the filtering.

The 80% affiliation rule. You must be a principal investigator with a minimum 80% affiliation to the Danish institution that will administer the grant. This is a real constraint for researchers holding split appointments across countries or institutions, or for those whose Danish position is part-time alongside industry work. Check your contracted percentage before you invest weeks in an application — this is the single condition most likely to disqualify an otherwise strong applicant, and it is not negotiable at the point of submission.

The Danish anchoring rule. The research must be based at a university or other non-profit research institution in Denmark. Nationality of the applicant is not the test; the institutional home of the project is. International researchers holding qualifying Danish positions are within scope. Conversely, a Danish national at a foreign institution is not, unless the project is anchored in Denmark through an eligible administrating institution.

PhD students cannot apply. The Foundation states this directly, and adds that applications submitted by PhD students will not be considered. This is a categorical exclusion rather than a soft preference. A PhD student can absolutely be funded by one of these grants — the four-year extension provision exists specifically for that — but the applicant of record must be an eligible principal investigator.

There is a fourth condition that sits slightly apart from eligibility but functions like one: the grant cannot cover the applicant’s own salary. You must have your salary secured from other sources. That makes this a project grant in the strict sense — money for the work, not for the person doing it — and it means the natural applicant is someone in a permanent or otherwise funded position who needs staff, equipment, consumables and running costs to execute a defined piece of research.

Building the budget

The Foundation’s framing is that the application must describe a clearly defined research project with an appropriate budget proportionate to the project’s length. Two words in that sentence do a lot of work: appropriate and proportionate.

Appropriate means the budget follows from the science rather than the ceiling. Reviewers on a committee like this read many applications in a sitting, and a budget that has obviously been reverse-engineered from DKK 4 million is easy to spot: round numbers, a headcount that does not map to the tasks described, equipment that appears in the budget but never reappears in the work plan.

Proportionate means the annual burn rate should make sense for the duration you are requesting. A three-year project spending seventy percent of its budget in year one needs to explain why — perhaps a major instrument purchase up front — and a one-year project with a four-year staffing plan is internally inconsistent.

The duration rules give you one structural decision to make early. The standard envelope is one to three years. If your grant covers a four-year PhD fellowship, the project can extend to four years, but the DKK 4 million maximum does not move. So a four-year PhD-anchored project is spreading the same money over more time. That is often the right choice — a PhD is a coherent unit of work and produces a trained researcher alongside the results — but it means less budget available for anything else. Decide which structure your science needs before you start filling in cost lines, not after.

Read those documents before finalising numbers; your institution’s research support office will usually have handled Novo Nordisk Foundation budgets before and will know the local conventions.

The application process through NORMA

Applications are submitted through NORMA, the Foundation’s electronic application system, reached from the call page. The Application Guidelines for this call have been available since 19 June 2026 and are the authoritative document for section structure, character limits, required attachments and formatting.

A few things are worth knowing about portal-based submission on a fixed clock. NORMA-style systems typically require the administrating institution to be registered and, in many cases, to countersign or approve the submission. That approval step is where late applications die. If your institution requires internal sign-off, your effective deadline is days before 3 September, not 2:00 PM on the day.

The 14:00 cut-off is itself a detail people misread. This is not midnight. An application still being assembled on the morning of 3 September is in trouble, particularly if attachments need converting or a co-applicant’s CV has not arrived. Treat 1 September as the real deadline and use the remaining two days for the failures you did not plan for.

The assessment period runs roughly three months. Review sits with the Foundation’s Committee for the Natural and Technical Sciences — a standing scientific committee rather than an ad hoc panel assembled per call. The practical implication is breadth: the people reading your application are accomplished scientists, but the physicists among them will be reading chemistry applications and the mathematicians will be reading engineering ones. Write for a scientifically sophisticated reader who is not in your subfield.

The Foundation has not published a detailed public scoring rubric for this call on the programme page. Where a funder does not publish weightings, the safe assumption is the standard triad: the quality and originality of the research question, the feasibility of the plan, and the track record and environment of the applicant. Build the application so that each of those is answerable from the text without the reader having to infer it.

If the answer in December is no, the next call is expected in June 2027, which gives roughly six months to rework. Applications that were close often succeed on resubmission with a sharper question and a tightened work plan.

How to make the application competitive

Lead with the question, not the field. The strongest opening paragraph states what is not currently known, why that gap matters, and what will be different if you close it. Field-survey openings that spend three paragraphs establishing that the area is important waste the reader’s most attentive minutes.

Make the fundamental character explicit. This is a call for fundamental research. If your project reads as incremental optimisation of an existing method, name what is conceptually new about it. If it genuinely is basic work, say so plainly rather than dressing it in applied language you think the Foundation wants.

Give the downstream horizon one honest sentence. Life science, health science or sustainability — pick the one that actually applies, state the connection at the right level of caution, and move on. Overclaiming here damages credibility for the rest of the document.

Show that the plan can fail safely. A work plan where every stage depends on the previous one succeeding is fragile. Reviewers reward projects with parallel tracks, defined decision points, and a stated fallback if the central assumption does not hold.

Match the budget to the tasks, line by line. Every postdoc month, every instrument, every consumables line should be traceable to something in the work plan. Reviewers who can follow that mapping trust the whole application more.

Use the environment. Your institutional setting, core facilities, collaborators and existing infrastructure are part of the feasibility case. A project that depends on an instrument you already have access to is more credible than one that depends on an instrument you will purchase and commission in year one.

Common mistakes

  • Missing the 80% affiliation threshold and discovering it late. Verify your contracted affiliation percentage with HR before writing.
  • Submitting as a PhD student, or listing a PhD student as the applicant of record with a senior colleague as nominal support. Applications from PhD students are not considered.
  • Budgeting the applicant’s own salary. It cannot be covered. If you do not have salary security for the project period, this is not the right instrument.
  • Treating 2:00 PM as an afterthought. The deadline is early afternoon Copenhagen time on 3 September 2026, and institutional approval steps may need to complete first.
  • Padding to the ceiling. DKK 4 million is a maximum, not a target. A request that visibly exceeds the needs of the described work invites scepticism about everything else.
  • Choosing the four-year PhD structure by default. It does not increase the money available; it spreads the same cap over a longer period. Choose it because the science is a PhD-shaped problem.
  • Writing only for specialists. A standing multidisciplinary committee will read this. Jargon that is unavoidable should be defined the first time it appears.
  • Ignoring the published guidelines. The Application Guidelines PDF governs structure, limits and attachments. Deviating from it costs you nothing but goodwill you cannot spare.

Do I need to be a Danish citizen? No. The requirement concerns institutional affiliation, not nationality. The research must be anchored at a university or other non-profit research institution in Denmark and you must hold at least 80% affiliation to the administrating institution.

Can the grant pay my salary? No. Applicants must secure their own salary from other sources. The grant funds the project, including staff other than the applicant, subject to the guidelines.
