The $200,000 ceiling is the maximum for an individual award, not a promise that every selected project will receive that amount. NSF says the number of awards and program budget depend on available funds and the quality of submissions. What ERI is meant to support

The PI must hold a doctoral degree in a field supported by NSF and must hold an appointment at the eligible institution. Postdoctoral research fellows cannot serve as the PI. The solicitation also requires that the PI have a sufficiently limited prior federal research record. Fourth, write the future-facing case without making unsupported promises. Common mistakes to avoid
The most serious mistake is assuming that “new investigator” simply means an assistant professor. ERI uses specific rules about the institution, doctoral degree, appointment and prior federal support. A PI can be early in an academic career and still fail the funding-history test, or can have an apparently modest record that needs to be documented under an exception.
Another mistake is treating the program as a collaborative grant with a nominal single PI. Co-PIs and separately submitted collaborative proposals are not allowed. Partners can contribute as senior or key personnel when the solicitation permits the activity, but the proposal must remain a coherent single-PI research initiation project. Similarly, do not propose a subaward to an R1 institution.
Weak proposals also confuse broader impacts with a list of outreach activities disconnected from the research. Explain how the project itself, its training environment or directly related activities will produce the stated benefits. Keep the research question central, and make the connection between the engineering work and the broader outcome easy to follow.
Finally, do not leave the Chair/Dean letter or local-time deadline until the last day. NSF states that proposals that fail the PI eligibility requirements can be returned without review. A complete application that arrives after 5:00 p.m. local time will not receive the benefit of a strong technical narrative.
